2006 Rally of the Tall Pines: Recap
M'kay so it's about a month late, but incase your wondering I have returned from the "Mineral Capital of Canada", Bancroft Ontario. Tall Pines was a lot of fun this year, and a little bit warmer even. The family that I stayed with were wonderfully generous, and I would like to thank them yet again for opening their house and home to us for the weekend. Thank you!
This year I was mainly tasked with crowd control. On Friday we prepared for the event by putting up snow fence, tearing it down, and then putting it up again. Parking about 400 cars, all miraculously facing the same direction. Running what seemed like miles of caution tape and guy wires to create the spectator areas, and protect nearby properties (and runways). We also helped construct the podium which you will see in some of the nighttime shots below.
The rally was a lot of fun and work-permitting I will be attending again in 2007. Worker gifts (a t-shirt and calendar) were top notch, but as usual the memories are better. Another thing I enjoy about these weekends is the people you meet. All the workers volunteer their time to put this event on, and most of them come from very interesting backgrounds. Sometimes you'll meet a guy with rich motor sports history, other times you meet a pre-dot-bomb communications mogul. The only common theme is a crazy love for the crazy sport of rally racing.
Tall Pines Pictures
Here are 5 random photos from the full set of 45 that Brenden and I took over the weekend (He's the daytime, I'm the horrible shaky nighttime). Click on one of them to see the whole Flickr photo set. In addition to these the official Tall Pines site has their own photo gallery up now with a few more daytime action shots.

Searching Flickr you'll find many more talented photographers that covered the event. Looks like some from 2005 (the ones with snow) also. http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Tall Pines Rally

Best moment of that weekend was working radar on Friday. All the drivers couldn't figure out how I could get to each stage so quickly, and then hide so well.Answer : I just drove faster than them :)
