Forget 60/40, think more like 80/20
The Pareto Principle applies to many things, added to my internal list is now the co-op process. Take a look at the screen clip below. Thats right, 43 apps and the deadline still isn't up. Thats nothing, I've seen 100+ applicants before.
To get an interview for the "high profile" jobs you're going to have to be better than 80% of your peers. Then in your interview your going to have to be better than 80% of the interviewies. Then, and only then, will you have the job.
Another analysis of this situation could be done with Sturgeon's law which states "Ninety percent of everything is crud."
