Burning CD\'s

So I was young, okay. We were (literally) the first kids on the block with a Compact Disc writer, a.k.a. a "Burner". This was great. Soon the twins from across the street asked us if we had one, or we mentioned it, either way they found out. So then it was time to test it out. We're gonna copy some music!

First we have to ask the parents.

They say "But... isn't that eee-leegal?". Technically maybe we say. A long debate ensued between 4 blonde haired primary school kids and a couple adults, both groups having no clue what their talking about. Finally we settled on a solution; phone the police, they'll tell us what to do.

I was the oldest and possibly most adamant, so I guess it was my time to take the heat on this one. Playing my youth card heavily I mustered what bravery I had and dialed the number to the local cop shop. There was an answer, to which I replied "I'm wondering... is it illegal to burn CD's?".

A bit of a pause ensued, after which the operator said I would have to speak with a real police officer. Another pause this time with FM 102 in the background followed. A stern constable answered to which I repeated "Is it illegal to burn CD's?". Nothing in my previous experience could have prepared me for his response, which sparked a bit of a downloading craze, and today remains a comforting thought whenever I hear of the RIAA sending out more letters in the mail.

His response - "So long as you don't start a fire, I don't see why not."
